The Duke and Duchess of Sussex appear to be moving swiftly in their plans to settle down in Canada, just over a week after announcing they will step back as senior royals and become financially independent.

And as it turns out, Prince Harry and Meghan appear to be interested in turning Vancouver into their new home for themselves and their baby, Archie.

According to a report today by British tabloid The Sun, the royals are interested in purchasing a Kitsilano waterfront home in the Vancouver Westside — right on Point Grey Road.

The property’s asking price based on the market listing is $35.88 million.

This is well above BC Assessment’s 2020 assessed value of $20.678 million, with $19.295 million from the value of the land and $1.383 million from the value of the structure.

The property’s assessed value has fluctuated in recent years due to various government policies that curb real estate speculation. It was assessed for $25.253 million in 2019, but it peaked at $28.457 million in 2018 and $27.737 million in 2017 during the height of the real estate market — up from $21.687 million in 2016. Most of the gains and losses over the years were from the fluctuating assessed value of the land.

Daily Hive has reached out to the realtor responsible for the listing for comment on the property’s reported royal interest.

With 6,857 sq. ft. of floor area over three levels on a lot size of about 12,300 sq. ft., it features six bedrooms, five bathrooms, and spectacular floor-to-ceiling windows, walk-out view-side terraces, and manicured private gardens.

The property comes with a private guest suite situated on the upper level.

It was first constructed in 1912, but has seen significant renovations and modernizations.

As with any property along Vancouver’s so-called “Golden Mile” or “Billionaires Row,” the highlight is its breathtaking views of Burrard Inlet, the North Shore mountains, and downtown Vancouver skyline. The expansive outdoor deck on the rear of the house is perfect for not only relaxing and soaking up the West Coast scenery, but also sized for entertaining.

A tall hedge and gate provides the property owners with some privacy from the public realm of Point Grey Road.

As well, this particular property is just footsteps away from lululemon founder Chip Wilson’s waterfront mansion.

Their residence in the UK is Frogmore Cottage — built in 1801 and part of the Crown Estate — on the grounds of Home Park, Windsor. It recently underwent extensive renovations to accommodate their newborn.

Prior to their initial royal breakaway announcement on January 8, the family spent several weeks vacationing on Vancouver Island.

Then just this past Monday, following an “emergency meeting” between senior members of the Royal Family, Queen Elizabeth II provided the couple with her blessing, announcing her decision to allow the Sussexes to split their time between Canada and the United Kingdom.

“My family and I are entirely supportive of Harry and Meghan’s desire to create a new life as a young family. Although we would have preferred them to remain full-time working Members of the Royal Family, we respect and understand their wish to live a more independent life as a family while remaining a valued part of my family,” said Her Majesty in a statement.

“Harry and Meghan have made clear that they do not want to be reliant on public funds in their new lives.”

But there will be a transition period, and the precise details over their arrangements still need to be ironed out, including security given their status as “internationally protected persons” under a United Nations convention.

Over the past week, there has been much speculation over where the couple will start their new life in Canada.

Toronto was believed as a possible location, given Meghan’s six-year history in the country’s largest city to film USA Network’s Suits legal drama TV series.

But there were also a number of signs that they could be interested in British Columbia’s South Coast, following their recent lengthy stay on Vancouver Island.

Additionally, a home in Vancouver would provide Meghan with entertainment industry opportunities not only in Hollywood North but also access to relatively short flights to Los Angeles. Earlier in the week, she reportedly signed a deal with Disney to provide voiceovers for a future unspecified project in exchange for a donation to the charity organization Elephants Without Borders.

Aside from reports of house hunting, Meghan has been keeping busy during her time in Vancouver this week, making visits to the Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre and Justice For Girls on Tuesday learn issues affecting women in the community and discuss climate justice for girls and the rights of Indigenous peoples.
