Max Domi's 25-game goal drought for Toronto Maple Leafs isn't even career-high

If it feels like it’s been a while since Max Domi scored a goal for the Toronto Maple Leafs, well, you’d be right.
Looking at Domi’s stats this season, there’s a big fat zero next to the goals column, as he’s failed to score in 21 games for Toronto.
With 27 shots on goal this season for Domi, he’s been unable to solve a single goaltender he’s faced this season.
It’s been nearly eight months since Domi last found the back of the net, scoring in a 3-2 win over the Boston Bruins in Game 2 of the first round of the 2024 playoffs.
And if you want to talk solely about the regular season (how streaks are often measured), it’s been 25 games since he last put in a regular season goal, which came on April 6 against the Bell Centre against his former Montreal Canadiens team.
While a streak measuring this long might be a career low for some players, it’s actually not the first time Domi’s had a stretch like this: it’s the third, as per Hockey Reference.
Dating back to his time in Dallas, Domi had a 28-game stretch without a goal that carried into his first season with Toronto, finally scoring a goal on November 30 of last year.
Amazingly, he had another 28-game stretch in 2022 where he couldn’t score, going without a goal from February 20 through April 16 while playing for the Carolina Hurricanes and then the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Domi has actually had six stretches in his career where he’s gone at least 20 games without a goal, with 22 streaks where he’s gone 10 games or more without scoring. To compare these stats with other top Leafs forwards, Auston Matthews has just one career stretch over 10 games without a goal, Mitch Marner has four, John Tavares has six, and William Nylander has seven.
So if you’ve ever wondered why a player who was a 12th overall pick has now played for seven NHL franchises in 10 years, perhaps his streaky nature is a key reason.
