The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has invoked their mandate after a man died and a police officer was injured at a Vaughan residence on Monday.

According to the York Regional Police, a call was received for reports of a domestic dispute. Information was received that a man was trying to light a fire inside of a residence on Jade Crescent last night at 11 pm.

Upon arrival, the police had an “interaction” with the 35-year-old man.

The man was pronounced dead on the scene and one police officer was taken to the hospital to treat a minor injury.

The SIU will be investigating reports, under the Police Services Act, as there was a death involved and consider whether or not an officer has committed an offence in connection with the incident. They will also be required to report the results of the investigation to the Attorney General.

Investigators are seeking witnesses and are asking anyone with information to contact the York Regional Police #4 District Criminal Investigations Bureau at 1-866-876-5423, ext.7441, or call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-tips.
