Lyft adding local GTA public transit information in-app for users

Lyft has added a new feature in their app for GTA transit riders.

On Thursday, the company added local public transit information in-app so riders can
compare more of their transit options and choose the best route.

The new transit feature in the Lyft app allows riders to see upcoming departures nearby for four GTA transit agencies including the TTC, GO Transit, UP Express and York Region Transit.

Now, riders will be able to easily see transit lines and approaching vehicles on the map. They can also enter a destination to see how to get there on transit —for nearby destinations, Lyft also shows walking directions alongside transit and ride share options.

Lyft’s 2020 Economic Impact Report found that 60% of Toronto riders do not own or lease
a personal vehicle. It also found 56% of Lyft riders have already used ride sharing to
connect with public transit, showing Toronto riders want this information more easily accessible in the app.

“Transit services are an essential part of urban transportation and we’re proud to help riders find their way on public transit,” Hannah Parish, Lyft’s Ontario General Manager, said in a statement.

“Especially now, it’s crucial for local Lyft riders, particularly those who don’t own a personal vehicle, to be able to compare all of their transportation options, whether that includes cycling, walking, public transit or rideshare.”

This past summer, Lyft nearly doubled its operating region to include more of the GTHA and opened a new permanent driver hub in Mississauga — the company now operates in all of the Hamilton, Halton, Peel, York and most of Durham region.

Lyft’s Transit feature is now available in 12 cities across North America, including New York, Chicago and Los Angeles, and will launch in Vancouver in the coming months.
