A liberal MP has tested positive for COVID-19.

On Wednesday, Kamal Khera, Liberal Member of Parliament for Brampton West and registered nurse, confirmed her diagnosis through a personal update on social media.

In her letter, Khera said she began developing flu-like symptoms on Saturday night while at home and “immediately began self-isolation.”

The MP was tested for coronavirus on Monday morning at Peel Memorial Centre in Brampton and the test was confirmed positive on Tuesday.

Following the guidance from Peel Public Health and the Public Health Agency of Canada, Khera said she will remain in self-isolation and continue to monitor her symptoms.

“While I am still experiencing symptoms, I am in good spirits. I know that many Canadians are in much worse circumstances. My thoughts are with all families who have been affected by this public health crisis.”

Khera noted that her office is fully operational and staff continue to work from home to ensure constituents are “well supported during these unprecedented times.”

She also emphasized the importance of social and physical distancing and thanked the healthcare workers on the frontlines “risking their lives every single day to keep the rest of us safe.”

Kamal used to practice as a nurse and registered to practice again on March 17, to ease the burden on nurses.

“As an RN there couldn’t be a more important time to give back to my community,” she said.

She did not say how she contracted the virus.

The MP received many well wishes on social media, including one from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

“Take care of yourself Kamal. We’re all thinking of you – and hoping you get well soon.”

Trudeau just finished his own 14-day quarantine after his wife Sophie Gregoire Trudeau tested positive for coronavirus.
