Matthews links up with Leafs superfans “The Matthews guys”

Auston Matthews finally met some big-time supporters that Toronto Maple Leafs fans are likely very well aware of.
Prior to last night’s game versus the Detroit Red Wings, Matthews took some time to meet some of his biggest fans, known in Toronto as ‘The Matthews Guys.’

While last night’s game was played in Toronto, this supportive group has made some serious travels over the years to watch their favourite player and team in action. Less than a month ago, they watched the Leafs go head-to-head with the New Jersey Devils at the Prudential Center.
“New Jersey 2024! Game 2 of the regular season. Devils home opener. Keefe’s first game against his former team and Leafs’ first win of the season,” they wrote on their official Instagram account. “The atmosphere was unbelievable. The Jersey fans were great, and what made it even better was [that we] were one of the few Leaf fans in the building to witness the W. Shout out to Auston Matthews for showing us some love. As die-hard Leafs fans, we do it for #leafsnation, a few nights with the boys, and to support the best player to ever wear the Leafs jersey.”

These travels are nothing out of the ordinary, as they’ve also watched the Leafs compete in Ottawa and even travelled to Sweden for the 2023 Global Series.
Unfortunately, they were unable to watch Matthews this time around. The 27-year-old suffered an upper-body injury last Sunday and has since been put on injured reserve. He was having a bit of a slow start prior to the injury, with five goals and 11 points through 13 games.
Despite not seeing their favourite player in action, The Matthews Guys were treated to a good game, with the Leafs winning by a 3-1 final.
