The logo was created by Jennifer Taback, an Anishinaabe-kwe artist and visual storyteller from Shawanaga First Nation.
āItās an exciting opportunity to reimagine such a well-known logo and share my interpretation with both my community and the Maple Leafsā community,ā said Taback. āAs an Anishinaabe-kwe from Shawanaga First Nation, Iām passionate about showcasing our cultural and visual storytelling through design and art. Our artistic style emphasizes line work and the iconography of meaningful symbols, and it was fascinating to blend both traditional and Western elements.ā
The logo features a beaded Maple Leaf as well as the oādemiin (strawberries) beneath it, embodying the teachings of love and the importance of a strong heart.
Merchandise showcasing the logo will be available at Real Sports’ in-arena location and online starting today, while game-worn warmup jerseys featuring the logo will be available following the game here.
Taback also included two medicines, sweetgrass, and cedar, along with a dreamcatcher honouring her parents. Meanwhile, the centre of the logo is a turtle, representing Turtle Island.
The logo unveiling is part of a larger effort to celebrate Indigenous culture, as the Leafs are one of three MLSE teams hosting Indigenous Heritage games this week. The Raptors hosted Indigenous Heritage night on Monday and the Marlies had their respective game this past weekend.
Multiple First Nations Chiefs and community partners will attend the game, including the Little Native Hockey League (Little NHL),Ā Armstrong Hockey, and the Toronto Fire Council.
