Toronto Maple Leafs statues outside Scotiabank Arena hit by vandals

The Toronto Maple Leafs staff have some clean-up work to do, but we’re not talking about on the ice.

According to a video circulating on social media this week, the Legends Row statues of Maple Leafs icons outside of Scotiabank Arena had a brief new appearance that has not entirely disappeared.

In a video posted to TikTok on Wednesday by user shmusepapi34, the players appear spattered with white paint or another similar substance, with a clear focus around their mouths.

It is not entirely clear if the act was done in protest or is an act of random vandalism.

Upon further investigation by Daily Hive on early Thursday afternoon, remnants of the paint remained on many statues, though much had been wiped off.

Legends Row, which was put into place from 2013 through 2017, currently depicts 14 iconic Leafs players in bronze sculptures: Wendel Clark, Turk Broda, Charlie Conacher, Syl Apps, Darryl Sittler, Johnny Bower, Mats Sundin, Borje Salming, Teeder Kennedy, Dave Keon, Tim Horton, Frank Mahovlich, Red Kelly, and George Armstrong.

All 14 players appear affected by the paint or other substance to varying degrees.

 

Though the area is occasionally closed off, it is usually free to the public to access outside gates 5 and 6 of the arena. It’s located within Maple Leaf Square near the large TV screen outside of the arena.

Toronto police wrote in an email statement to Daily Hive that there were not “any reports on file” about the incident.

Daily Hive has reached out to MLSE for comment but has yet to hear back about the incident.
