NHL fines Toronto Maple Leafs' Max Domi for elbow to head

Toronto Maple Leafs forward Max Domi will be feeling a little bit lighter in the wallet after his actions on Sunday.

Facing off against the Philadelphia Flyers yesterday evening, Domi got his elbow up in the face of Garnet Hathaway, knocking the opposing forward to the ice.

While he was assessed a penalty for the play, that wasn’t the end of the discipline for Domi.

The NHL announced Monday that Domi had been fined $5,000 for the incident, the maximum allowed under the NHL’s collective bargaining agreement with the players’ association.

And while they were able to kill off the penalty assessed to Domi, Toronto ultimately got the best of their opponents in the end as well. Morgan Rielly ended up scoring the overtime winner for the hosts, giving the Leafs a 3-2 win in the extra frame.

What sparked the Leafs/Flyers feud?

Domi may have been attempting some retribution on behalf of teammate Jake McCabe, who was injured earlier in the game in a fight with Hathaway.

“I didn’t like what I saw, I’ll tell you that,” Leafs coach Craig Berube said of seeing McCabe’s injury. “He is sticking up for his team and his teammate. We all really appreciate that, but I did not like seeing that happen.”

It won’t take much time for the two teams to return to action against one another. The Leafs and Flyers go right back at it on Tuesday night, facing off against each other at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia.
