Restaurant that was a local staple just closed after decades in Toronto

A Toronto restaurant that’s been a neighbourhood favourite for decades has officially closed permanently due to development.

Death, taxes, and your favourite restaurant shutting down. These are truths we must all come to accept one day or another, and Toronto’s had a particularly rough go in the “restaurants closing” department as of late.

While over the past several months, the city has welcomed a number of exciting (and tasty) new concepts, we’ve also had to say goodbye to more than a few longstanding institutions.

We hate to be the bearers of bad news, but we’re about to add yet another closure to that list.

As of Aug. 31, Davisville Village staple Kramer’s Bar & Grill has officially entered the deadpool.

Located at the intersection of Yonge and Davisville, the bar, on first glance, was nothing entirely special; just your typical neighbourhood sports bar, serving pints and wings on occasionally sticky tabletops.

It was the community that Kramer’s called in that really set it apart. The neighbourhood flocked to the bar for weekly trivia nights, live music, and to watch the sports game du jour.

It was, in every respect, the ultimate neighbourhood bar, servicing an area of the city that’s largely segmented due to the major streets running through it.

Alas, the winds of change blow strongly in Toronto, and Kramer’s, along with several of its neighbours, are the latest casualties, as the entire block prepares to be torn down for a new development.

“It is with heavy hearts that we announce that our landlords have given us two months’ notice that they are terminating our lease to clear the block for development,” the bar wrote in the caption of a June 26 Instagram post.

“Unfortunately, this means that Kramer’s will be closing permanently.”

Come Sept. 1, the day after Kramer’s last service, the bar took to Instagram once again to share a heartfelt message of thanks to the community that supported it over the years.

“It has been a pure pleasure to be here at Kramer’s all these years,” the caption of the post reads.

“We will miss each and every one of you,” the post continues.

“Thank you, seriously, thank you so much for everything, every memory, every laugh, every mess… it’s all been so worth it. Most of all, thanks for your friendship. We have become a real family, haven’t we?”

Before you go grabbing your tissues, there is still some hope that Kramer’s, or some new-and-improved version of it, could make a comeback in the future.

The caption concludes with a message telling fans that the bar will let them know “where we land,” and will “see you there.”

Here’s hoping that day comes sooner, rather than later.
