KFC Canada is getting plant-based 'chicken' this year

KFC is stepping towards an evolution.

Because today, the restaurant is testing Beyond Meat plant-based “chicken” in the US. And Canada’s next on the innovation list.

Running at a location in Atlanta (2637 Cobb Pkwy South East, Smyrna, Ga.) for today only, customers will get to choose from nuggets or boneless wings, tossed in Nashville Hot, Buffalo or Honey BBQ sauce.

The samples are being offered for free alongside the order of any KFC menu item from 10:30 am until 6:30 pm, while supplies last.

“KFC Beyond Fried Chicken is so delicious, our customers will find it difficult to tell that it’s plant-based,” said Kevin Hochman, president and chief concept officer for KFC US said in a release. “I think we’ve all heard ‘it tastes like chicken’ – well our customers are going to be amazed and say, ‘it tastes like Kentucky Fried Chicken!’”

Feedback from the Atlanta test will be considered as KFC evaluates a broader test or potential national rollout.

And you know what comes after a US rollout? A Canadian rollout.

“KFC Canada is cooking up a new plant-based creation of our own in our Canadian kitchen with our world-renowned craveable taste,” Samantha Redman, chief marketing officer of KFC Canada told Daily Hive. “We plan to test in select restaurants by the end of 2019 with a national launch in 2020.”

For those who can’t wait until the end of the year, Redman says, there’s a plant-based veggie sandwich currently available at KFC that’s been around for a decade.

It’s, as the eatery says, a Kentucky Fried Miracle.
