Some savvy moves from the New York Yankees played a prominent role in their series win over the Toronto Blue Jays.
The Yankees were able to knock off the Blue Jays by a 4-3 final on Monday, giving them the 2-1 edge in their three-game series. The win, however, didn’t come without some controversy.
Many watching Monday’s outing noticed that the Yankees seemed to be relaying pitches throughout the game. One particular instance came in the first inning, where Aaron Judge was spotted spreading his arms wide periodically during a Ben Rice at-bat. The 26-year-old Rice wound up crushing a three-run home run to give his team the early lead.
“They were relaying. They’re good at it,” Blue Jays manager John Schneider said postgame. “Max [Scherzer] needs to be a little bit better… It’s fair game. The whole MLB knows the Yankees are good when they’ve got something. I’m not the only one that’s going to say it. Maybe I’m the only one who’s going to say it publicly, but we’ve got to do a better job of making sure we’re not giving anything away.
“At the end of the day, you’ve got to be tight, you’ve got to make pitches. But yeah, it was pretty clear [Cody] Bellinger was giving it to Judge, and Judge was giving it to Rice.”

Monday’s affair was another rough outing for Max Scherzer, who gave up four earned runs through 4.1 innings. After putting together a streak of five-straight quality starts, he’s now given up 12 earned runs over his last 14.1 innings. The future Hall of Famer was also aware that the Yankees were relaying his pitches, but similar to Schneider, he didn’t seem to have much issue with it.
“That’s part of the game. That’s part of the game,” Scherzer said afterward. “It’s 2025. Everybody knows it. We live it. That’s just part of the game.”
Scherzer also revealed that the Yankees aren’t the first team to pick up on his change-up prior to throwing the pitch. The 41-year-old felt he had made the proper adjustments, but said afterward that it’s clear he still has more work to do.
Following the loss, the Blue Jays’ record has dropped to 82-61. They have just a two-game lead over the Yankees for first place in the AL East, but will look to widen that gap in a three-game series versus the Houston Astros, which will get underway on Tuesday.
