Here's how much money the Toronto Maple Leafs have left to spend

The Toronto Maple Leafs might not be done just yet.

Now, on the third day of free agency, the Leafs still have a few loose ends left to tie up.

Losing five players thus far, including star winger Mitch Marner in a high-profile sign-and-trade, it hasn’t exactly been the busiest free agency for the Leafs in terms of newcomers.

So far, they’ve signed forwards Travis Boyd, Benoit-Olivier Groulx, Michael Pezzetta, Vinni Lettieri, and re-signed defenceman Dakota Mermis. While any or all of them might play a few games for Toronto next season, they’re all depth signings with a cap hit of under US$1 million.

The biggest moves for the team came earlier in the summer, when they locked up both Matthew Knies and John Tavares on multi-year deals.

How much money do the Leafs have left?

PuckPedia.com puts the Leafs at having just $4.98 million left for next season’s roster. For Toronto, they’ve got a few options on how to spend it.

Priority No. 1 at this point in time might be getting restricted free agent Nick Robertson signed, who is coming off a 15-goal, seven-assist season with the team. He’s the lone player under 30 who had significant ice time for the Leafs last season who remains without a contract for next year.

Max Pacioretty and Jani Hakanpaa are the Leafs’ two lone unrestricted free agents left. Pacioretty, at age 36, found his legs in the postseason this past spring, putting up three goals and five assists in 11 playoff games for Toronto. Hakanpaa dealt with ongoing knee issues and played just two games for the Leafs this past season, so he might not exactly be a prime candidate for a return.

In any case, don’t expect too many big splashes for Leafs general manager Brad Treliving over the next week, as more aggressive moves might come via the trade market.
