Hamilton mall extends holiday hours as health officials discourage travel from lockdown zones

A Hamilton shopping mall has extended its holiday hours to allow its guests more time to shop as regions around the city remain in lockdown and Ontario health officials plead with residents to stay home.

In a statement to Daily Hive, Cadillac Fairview said that in an effort to support the City of Hamilton’s limited occupancy levels for indoor spaces, they extended their operating hours at CF Lime Ridge to “allow shoppers more time to shop throughout the holiday season.”

“To support this new mandate around occupancy levels, Cadillac Fairview is working with its retail clients to ensure compliance and is encouraging consumers to shop during non-peak hours throughout the week to help spread out traffic in the centre,” said Cadillac Fairview.

This news comes after York Region, along with Windsor-Essex County, went into lockdown on Monday for at least 28 days.

Toronto and Peel have been in lockdown for three weeks and are continuing until at least December 21.

During Premier Doug Ford’s press conference on Tuesday afternoon, Ontario Health Minister Christine Elliot asked residents in current lockdown zones to stay home and asked they do not shop in areas with lower zones.

“We are really encouraging people not to travel from a lockdown zone to a zone that is at a lesser level, even though Hamilton is in the red. We want people to stay in place, stay in your own homes as much as possible, stay with your own household group,” said Elliot.

“I know people want to celebrate but this time next year will be very different. We will be able to resume our holiday celebrations but for right now, please don’t go shopping in other areas that are lower zones. That just increases the community transmission, increases our numbers, and puts more strain on our hospitals to deal with it.”

The City of Hamilton has also mandated active COVID-19 screening measures for all those entering the mall in addition to stores within the mall already doing so.

Lime Ridge Mall is now open every day from 9 am to 9 pm, Christmas Eve from 9 am to 5 pm and Boxing Day from 9 am to 9 pm. They are closed on Christmas Day.
