It was a postseason to remember for Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and the Toronto Blue Jays, but a World Series victory was not meant to be.
A Game 7 loss against the LA Dodgers ended what was an incredible season for the Canadian/Dominican first-baseman. Guerrero Jr. silenced his critics this season, putting together one of the most dominant postseason runs in recent memory.
At the age of 26, Vladdy led this Toronto squad to the brink of eternal glory, smashing eight home runs, notching 15 RBIs, and hitting at an incredible .397 over the course of 18 games. It was a run that proved that he could show up when it mattered most, and showed that he was worth every penny of that $500 million deal he signed shortly before the season started.
Yet, when he talked with reporters after the loss, he did not mention himself. Instead, he apologized to Blue Jays fans for not getting the job done.
“I got to be very thankful, very grateful for our fans, for the city,” Guerrero Jr. said. “I’m sorry, because we couldn’t give that title that we know the entire city wants.”

Nobody took the loss as hard as Vladdy did in the aftermath of that heartbreaking Game 7 loss. Tears were shed in the Toronto clubhouse, with many lamenting that this could be the last time that this group takes to the baseball field.
That pain was felt with a shot of Guerrero Jr. holding back tears in the Blue Jays dugout as the Dodgers celebrated their second consecutive World Series championship. Vladdy was the leader of this team, and you can tell how much responsibility he puts on himself for a loss like this.

This will sting for a while, but Blue Jays fans won’t remember Guerrero coming to terms with the loss in the dugout. Instead, they will forever talk about the countless big moments where he came through for the Jays during this run.
Vladdy created several iconic moments for a generation of Canadian baseball fans. Whether that be the grand slam in Game 2 of the ALDS against the New York Yankees, or the home run he hit off Shohei Ohtani in Game 4 of the World Series.
Those are the moments that will define him, not this loss.

Guerrero Jr. did his part as the Jays were facing defeat in the bottom of the 11th inning. He led off that final gasp with a leadoff double and found his way to third base, but his teammates just couldn’t get him home.
Vladdy is the de facto leader of this ball club, and with his contract in Toronto running through the 2039 season, the hope is that he will have many more opportunities to bring the World Series north of the border.
