From sourdough-making classes to raclette parties, there are a lot of warm and cozy events happening in Toronto’s food and drink scene.

Which is exactly what the city needs right now, considering it’s now officially cold.

Here’s what’s up in the consumable department this week:

Enjoy tasting various wines while learning about the ways that they’re made, and then stay for a reception that will include even more wine, plus cheeses. You’ll be hard-pressed to find a better way to spend a Monday evening.

Spend three fun hours with your hands in the dough, learning what makes bread great, how a starter lives (and how to keep her happy), how to shape your loaf and prepare it for the oven, and how to mix and fold a classic white loaf. Happy tastebuds, happy tummy.

Where: Prairie Boy Bread – 970 College Street
When: Sunday, January 13 from 3 pm to 6 pm

This is the one type of school you’ll be down to attend: beer school. From words like ‘dry hopped sour’ to ‘wild farmhouse’ to ‘Porter’ to ‘Stout,’ all the terminology surrounding brews can get a little bit… confusing. This event is for those who want some clarity. Or want to look like they know what they’re talking about. Here’s lookin’ at you, (of-age) kid

Where: Henderson Brewing Company – 128A Sterling Road
When: Thursday, January 17 from 7 pm to 8:30 pm

There’s nothing you need more in the dead of winter than a plate full of food covered in melty, gooey cheese. This traditional Alpine dinner will feature 250 grams of imported raclette cheese, a charcuterie plate, salad, bread and “as many potatoes as you need.” You’ll also get a glass of French wine.

Where: Coq of the Walk – 488 College Street

There will also be prizes, and the odds of winning are higher if you wear Hawaiian shirt or Hawaiian dress.
