Easton Cowan renting his Toronto apartment from former Leafs player

When Fraser Minten made the Toronto Maple Leafs out of training camp last year, he probably expected that his future would be long-term in the city.
So much so that Minten opted to buy a piece of property in town, which isn’t always the case for young hockey players in one of North America’s most notorious real estate markets.
But things happen fast in professional sports, and the 2022 second-round draft pick only ever ended up playing 19 NHL games for the Leafs. In March, he was shipped off to the Boston Bruins on trade deadline day, as part of a package deal centred around defenceman Brandon Carlo.
There are probably not too many 21-year-old landlords roaming around in Toronto these days, but it seems like Minten suddenly became part of the exclusive club.
Thankfully for Minten, he found a replacement pretty quickly. Enter Easton Cowan, the Leafs’ 2023-first-round pick who is gunning for a spot on the NHL roster.
“[Minten] bought a place last year, so I’m going to rent off him and stay there this year,” Cowan told reporters today, as per The Hockey News’ Nick Barden.
This past season with the London Knights, Cowan put up 29 goals and 40 assists over 46 regular-season games, followed by 13 goals and 26 assists over 17 OHL playoff games en route to the league title.
At the Memorial Cup, Cowan added four goals and three assists in five games to win tournament MVP and the national title itself. A year after falling in the Memorial Cup Final to OHL rivals Saginaw, it’s a fitting cap to a junior career, as he’ll either be playing for the AHL’s Marlies or the Leafs themselves this year.
“My mind’s pretty free right now. I got no worries,” Cowan said. “I know I’ll be playing somewhere in Toronto this year, and obviously I want to play in the NHL, but I just got to have a good mindset and keep it free.”
