Donnovan Bennett announces departure from Sportsnet after more than a decade

One of the biggest names at Sportsnet is moving on from the company.

“After a combined 17 years at The Score and Sportsnet, my chapter at Rogers Sports and Media has come to a close,” Donnovan Bennett wrote today on X.

Bennett’s LinkedIn places him starting at now-defunct The Score television network in 2006, which was handed over to Rogers in 2013 in one of the biggest acquisitions in the Canadian sports media scene.

While the app and website remained separate media brands that were not part of that acquisition, The Score‘s television wing eventually became Sportsnet 360, with some of its personalities like Bennett ultimately used throughout all of Sportsnet’s properties.

“Although there’s still much I’m hoping to accomplish, I’m filled with gratitude for the stories I’ve been able to tell. The producers that aired them, the editors who improved them, and of course the athletes, coaches, executives and administrators who trusted me enough to let me have a hand in telling theirs.”

Bennett did not list a specific reason for his departure, but did hint at “new opportunities” on the horizon.

“I’m invigorated to be a free agent for the first time in my career and to be able to explore new opportunities, one of which is right around the corner. I can’t wait to share more soon, but I’m most excited to get lost in the creative process and the work, as the journey is more rewarding than the destination.”

Bennett, a former university running back for the Western Mustangs, had a reputation for showcasing Canadian talent in his work, particularly through his highly celebrated video essays.

His now-former employer appeared to have high praise for him as well.

“Thank you, Donnovan, for more than a decade of powerful storytelling across Sportsnet platforms, shining a light on the important conversations and meaningful moments in sports. We wish you all the best!” Sportsnet’s PR account replied to his post on X.
