Toronto Maple Leafs plan to terminate David Kampf's contract: report

The Toronto Maple Leafs are expected to terminate David Kampf’s contract.

According to a report from TSN’s Darren Dreger, the Leafs will be placing the 30-year-old on waivers as part of one of the last steps to an ongoing dispute between the team and the player.

Kampf was in the third season of a four-year contract that carries a $2.4 million cap hit.

Kampf, an eight-year NHL vet, has yet to suit up for the Leafs this season, but skated in four games with the Toronto Marlies. He was recently suspended for refusing to join the Marlies on a road trip.

In 59 games with the Leafs last season, he scored five goals and added eight assists. But by the time the playoffs came around, the writing was mostly on the wall that he’d fallen out of favour with Toronto coach Craig Berube, as he suited up for just 12 minutes of action in one game through two postseason rounds last spring.

It is not exactly clear what the next steps will be for Kampf, who cleared waivers earlier this season when placed there at the start of the campaign.

A native of the Czech Republic, he’s been in recent projections for the team’s 2026 Olympic roster, so he’ll surely be looking for a team somewhere in the world to skate on the meantime before then.

More to come…
