Countries that are most and least likely to win the FIFA World Cup

There are 48 countries set to be represented on the FIFA World Cup stage in less than two weeks.

Four of those countries, Cabo Verde, Curaçao, Jordan, and Uzbekistan, will be making their World Cup debuts. Meanwhile, Canada is set to play in the tournament for a third time after competing in 1986 and 2022.

Given the large number of teams, there is a wide discrepancy when it comes to who is being viewed as favourites heading in.

Spain, France, England, Brazil, and Argentina are among the tournament favourites by oddsmakers. Portugal, Germany, and the Netherlands are also high up on the list. 

No surprise, but Canada is a long shot, with the 23rd best odds.

The 2022 World Cup saw Argentina defeat France 4-2 on penalties to win it all after the match ended in a 3-3 draw. Canada, meanwhile, was eliminated in the group stage and ultimately finished the tournament ranked 31st overall.

The FIFA World Cup is set to begin on June 11 and will carry on until July 19. Canada’s first game of the tournament will be against Bosnia and Herzegovina on June 12.
