Cineplex will not be opening movie theatres in Ontario on Friday, as most of the province enters Stage 3 of reopening.

On Wednesday, Cineplex spokesperson Sarah Van Lange told Daily Hive in a statement that the company is not “in a position” to open their theatres, even though they welcome the news.

“The news that Ontario is entering Stage 3 is certainly welcome by the team here at Cineplex! We are still reviewing what’s being proposed by the province, so as a result we aren’t in a position to open our theatres in Ontario on Friday,” she said.

For the Cineplex team, the health and safety of employees and guests is the “top priority” as is ensuring their time is “safe, comfortable, and welcoming.”

Van Lange did not say when the theatres will be reopening.

On Monday, Premier Doug Ford announced that 24 regions in the province can enter Stage 3 on Friday at midnight.

In the next stage, gatherings will increase to 50 indoors and 100 outdoors, as dine-in restaurants, bars, gyms, fitness centres, live shows, performing arts centres, casinos, concert venues, recreational facilities, team sports, fundraisers, fairs, festivals or open houses, and tour and guide services can reopen.
