You can attend the Opera for free in Toronto this May

Have you lived in Toronto for quite some time, but still haven’t made your way over to see an Opera performance?

Well, now’s your chance.

Opera for Toronto is a new Canadian Opera Company (COC) initiative that seeks to create more opportunities for Torontonians and visitors to experience opera in the city – for free!

On Wednesday, May 8, the COC will host a fully-staged performance of Puccini’s La Bohème at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts.

And everyone in the audience has been invited through a number of civic partnerships, community-based groups, and educational organizations. Read: there are no tickets being sold!

However, to try and encourage people who might never have tried opera before, the COC is giving away 200 tickets for this special performance and anyone is eligible to sign up.

Note that tickets are first-come, first-served, and duplicate requests will not be filled.

The show itself is one of the most beloved and widely performed operas in the world.

La Bohème is the story of young artists, struggling to pay the rent, pursue their art, and find “the one”; it’s a familiar story that formed the basis for the hit musical RENT – and is probably also one you’ve overheard in line at your favourite artsy coffee shop in the city.

Plus, many of the principal roles that night will be cast by members of the COC Ensemble Studio, a top-notch development program that trains the best young opera singers in the country.

This is a chance to get to know emerging talent at the very start of their career. You know, like when you saw your favourite band performing at The Monarch “before they got big.”
