Canada's telecom giants ranked among the most expensive in the world

It’s no secret that Canadians pay exorbitant amounts for wireless data.

It’s gotten so bad, in fact, that a number of Canadian telecom giants have gone head to head trying to offer customers cheap(er) data plans and device financing options.

But how does Canada’s wireless pricing compare to the rest of the world?

To put it bluntly, not very well. A new report from Rewheel, a Finnish-based mobile data consulting company, found Canada’s telecommunications giants — Telus, Rogers, and Bell — to be among the most expensive in the world.

The study compared 4G and 5G monthly prices among 168 mobile network operators in European, American, Asia Pacifica, and African countries.

Rankings were based on smartphones, mobile broadband, and wireless broadband minimum monthly plan prices.

“Telus, Bell, and Rogers Canada were the operators with the least competitive monthly prices,” reads the report. “i.e. highest weighted average monthly prices.”

Looking at the rest of the world, The United Kingdom was found to have the lowest average monthly prices among smartphones, mobile broadband, and wireless broadband.

Greece was the most expensive European country, while Canada was the most expensive country overall.

This is not the first study to show that Canadians pay an astoundingly high amount for their wireless plans.

A previous report commissioned by Canada’s Department of Innovation, Science and Economic Development (ISED), also showed that Canadians pay some of the highest wireless rates in the world.

A report from UK company Cable.co.uk also stressed that Canada’s mobile data prices were among the most expensive in the world.
