Bata Shoe Museum

Beadwork is a longstanding art form with significance across many cultures and countries. On footwear, beads have been used for both decorative and symbolic purposes, expressing status, identity, and spirituality.

The meticulous art form takes as much extraordinary skill and time today as it did back then, and BrilliantĀ aims to honour and share the distinct histories, traditions, and meanings that have been beaded into footwear from around the world.

The exhibition brings together over 85 objects spanning Africa, Europe, South Asia, Western Asia, and Turtle Island across more than 400 years of history.

You’ll see elaborate Yoruba regalia from over 100 years ago, Persian footwear adorned with glass beads from the 19th century, an Italian pair of platforms rocked by Madonna in 1993, and more.
