Brayden Schenn nixes Toronto Maple Leafs trade attempt: report

The Toronto Maple Leafs don’t appear to exactly be the hottest destination for NHL players at this time of year.

On Friday afternoon, the Leafs made a deal with the Philadelphia Flyers for 30-year-old centre Scott Laughton, their first move of this year’s trade deadline.

But according to TSN’s Bob McKenzie, Laughton was actually Toronto’s second choice, as they were trying to pry Brayden Schenn away from the St. Louis Blues.

“The Leafs were in a situation where they were trying to get Brayden Schenn… but it didn’t look like he was ready to waive [his no-move clause]… so Toronto went to go get [Laughton],” McKenzie said on TSN earlier today during their TradeCentre panel.

Schenn has a cap hit of US$6.5 million through the 2027-28 season, but had frequently been mentioned by many reporters as a player potentially on the move.

No further info was given about his choice or if he’ll end up getting dealt elsewhere ahead of the 3 p.m. EST trade deadline later today.

Interestingly, Schenn and Laughton were actually teammates on the Flyers for five years, before Schenn was flipped at the 2017 NHL Draft to St. Louis.

Schenn is the second big name to shut down a trade to Toronto. With former Blues teammate and current Nashville Predators centre Ryan O’Reilly reportedly also nixing any deal involving the Leafs.

Though O’Reilly doesn’t have a no-move clause like Schenn, the Predators reportedly are offering him the ability to weigh in on a future destination should he go on the move. He had previously played for the Leafs in 2023, coming over from St. Louis at the deadline.

Schenn’s older brother Luke has been on the move twice already this week, first being flipped from the Predators to the Pittsburgh Penguins before being sent to the Winnipeg Jets.
