The Toronto Blue Jays missed out on signing Juan Soto on Sunday night, with the star slugger signing a massive $765 million deal over the course of 15 seasons with the New York Mets.
For Toronto fans (and most other teams), it’s a second straight offseason where they flunked out on the league’s top free agent after falling short in the Shohei Ohtani sweepstakes one year ago.
While Soto doesn’t look like he’ll end up playing in Toronto, the focus now shifts to homegrown superstar Vladimir Guerrero Jr., who is eligible for a massive contract extension or the possibility of entering his own bidding war in the free-agent market after the next season.
Guerrero’s views on the matter seem to suggest that he just wanted to take advantage of the massive deal between Soto and the Mets to wish one of his friends well.
Guerrero Jr. took to his Instagram stories on Monday morning to send off his congratulations to his longtime pal, sharing a post from Bleacher Report that detailed Soto’s $765 million deal as the largest contract in sports history.
“Bendiciones mi hermano bien merecido,” which roughly translates to “Blessings my brother, well deserved,” while adding a series of “mind-blown” emojis.

Guerrero had a monster year in 2024, hitting .323 with 30 home runs and 103 RBIs in 159 games while finishing sixth in AL MVP voting. Soto finished third in MVP voting, while it was his now-ex teammate in Yankees star Aaron Judge who took home the award.
Though interleague matchups aren’t always guaranteed in pro baseball, Guerrero and the Blue Jays won’t have to wait long to face off against Soto in his new uniform. The Jays are slated to visit the Mets at Citi Field in New York for a three-game set beginning on April 4, which coincidentally is the team’s home opener.
