Toronto Blue Jays' Davis Schneider shares touching tribute to late brother

Whenever Davis Schneider steps into the batter’s box for the Toronto Blue Jays, he’s doing so with a heavy heart.

Schneider recently joined the 6ix Inning Stretch podcast hosted by former Blue Jay Whit Merrifield and broadcaster Lindsay Dunn to chat about his life both inside and outside of baseball.

One of the topics the Blue Jays outfielder broached was his late brother Steven, who passed away in 2020 at the age of 26 after an accidental drug overdose.

“I just try to [work hard] every single day, have fun, make people happy. I feel like that’s like the number one goal in life, and [Steven] was the best. He struggled with addiction, struggled with mental health stuff. It puts a lot of things in perspective,” Schneider told the hosts.

“We play a game for a living. So like, you can’t take it too seriously to where it affects your day-to-day life outside of baseball. So I try to make sure I leave baseball at the stadium.”

Schneider added that his typically upbeat attitude can be tied back to Steven.

“He would be the first one if he saw me down, or see me angry, he would call me a wimp or a bad name I couldn’t say on this podcast,” Schneider added of how he tries to honour his brother’s memory.

When he’s not in Toronto, the 26-year-old Schneider can typically be found back in New Jersey, sleeping in his childhood bedroom as the youngest of four siblings.

“[In the offseason], I still live with my parents, and that’s a big thing for them, because they’ve been through a lot too, and I feel like the struggle they had to deal with is way worse than me. You never want to lose a child… people have it a lot worse than me. So I just kind of make sure I think about that every single day,” Schneider added.
