It didn’t take very long for former Toronto Blue Jays relief pitcher Genesis Cabrera to find a new home.
The 29-year-old left-hander agreed to terms with the New York Mets this afternoon on a minor-league deal that includes an invitation to big league camp.

Cabrera was originally acquired by the Blue Jays in July 2023 in a trade with the Arizona Cardinals that saw minor league catcher Sammy Hernandez head the other way. He finished the 2023 season with a solid 2.66 ERA along with 20 strikeouts in 23.2 innings for the Blue Jays.
The 2024 season saw Cabrera throw 62.2 innings for the Jays, where he registered a 3.59 ERA along with two saves and 50 strikeouts. Despite the relatively solid numbers, the Blue Jays outrighted him to Triple-A Buffalo earlier this month. He wound up rejecting the assignment and instead elected free agency.
Though Cabrera’s numbers weren’t horrible, it wasn’t a major surprise to see the Jays outright him, as they are looking to completely revamp their bullpen after a horrendous 2024 season.
Last week, the front office chose to non-tender fan-favourite Jordan Romano, as well as Dillon Tate. They did, however, choose to bring one bullpen arm back, re-signing Erik Swanson to a one-year deal that will carry a salary of $3 million.
Given all the bullpen transactions that have been made, the Blue Jays will likely need to hit the free-agent market to add to what is now a depleted group. Luckily for them, there are plenty available, including some highly sought-after arms such as Tanner Scott, Carlos Estevez, and former Blue Jay Jeff Hoffman.
