The Toronto Blue Jays need help just about wherever they can get it over the course of the offseason.
According to Sportsnet’s Ben Nicholson-Smith, the organization has their eyes tied to a pair of star infielders.
“If the Blue Jays don’t add a corner outfielder, the next most likely position they’ll upgrade is second base, so it’s worth noting that Ha-Seong Kim’s expected to be fully recovered from shoulder surgery early in 2025, according to agent Scott Boras. As expected, the Blue Jays have some interest in Kim and Gleyber Torres as they survey infield options,” Nicholson-Smith wrote.
Kim has spent his entire four-year career in the MLB with the San Diego Padres, while Torres has spent all of his time as a pro with the New York Yankees, playing seven seasons in the Bronx.
Both players enter a possible free agent market with a decent set of accolades: Kim won the National League Gold Glove at second base in 2022, while Torres has been a two-time MLB All-Star.
The Jays won’t be the only team in the running for either player, however.
As per MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand, “Kim has already generated ‘lots of interest’ in the early days of free agency, while a second source said the [San Francisco] Giants are focused on signing the 29-year-old. The [Milwaukee] Brewers have also been connected to Kim, but the Giants appear to be the club most interested in the infielder.”
Blue Jays general manager Ross Atkins hasn’t always been the most transparent executive but he confirmed this week that his team is willing to spend in free agency.
“There will be opportunities via free agency and via trade. We have some depth that, if we need to make trades, we’re in position to do so,” Atkins said.
