MLB insider believes Blue Jays and Guerrero Jr. will part ways

Toronto Blue Jays fans may need to start preparing themselves for a future without first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr.

There have been talks surrounding Guerrero’s future for some time now, though the public consensus was that a deal would eventually get done between the two. The 25-year-old is set to become a free agent following the 2025 season.

While there is still plenty of time for something to be worked out between the two parties, the extension not yet having been agreed to is raising eyebrows for many. It’s now gotten to the point that Ken Rosenthal, one of the top MLB insiders, doesn’t believe the Jays will re-sign the four-time All-Star.

In his most recent article, Rosenthal mentions that he is “baffled” by the Blue Jays front office, who could have received big returns for both Guerrero and Bo Bichette at last season’s trade deadline, but instead elected to hold onto both.

He also mentioned the Jays’ continued interest in Juan Soto but doesn’t believe they are a great fit for the superstar free agent given the uncertainty surrounding their best two players.

“The [Blue Jays] strategy still seems odd, not to mention risky,” Rosenthal wrote. “Guerrero is an anchor to build around. And the best guess is that he will be gone.”

Blue Jays fans have become frustrated with the organization’s front office over the past several years, and it’s amplified to an entirely different level following an ugly 2024 season. If they were to part ways with Guerrero, the level of frustration would reach highs we have likely never seen before amongst this fan base.

If Guerrero were to wind up being made available via trade, or even as a free agent next offseason, there would be massive interest from many teams. After down seasons by his lofty standards in 2022 and 2023, he bounced back in a big way in 2024, hitting .323 with 30 home runs and 103 RBIs in 159 games, while finishing sixth in AL MVP voting.
