Even as they’re enjoying one of their best seasons in recent memory, the Toronto Blue Jays still don’t know everything about what they’ll look like moving forward past this year.
Currently having the opportunity to enter into free agency this winter for the first time, star shortstop Bo Bichette’s future in Toronto remains uncertain.
Since Bichette made his MLB debut in 2019, only Vladimir Guerrero Jr. has played more games for the Blue Jays than him.
Toronto’s front office has shown a willingness to pay up for stars in the past, but no deal has come to fruition yet for Bichette.
But that doesn’t necessarily mean he’s out the door, despite what some media reports have been suggesting for years.
Bichette is on the final year of a three-year deal, making US$17.5 million this season.
“It’s always important to educate fans that there are no contracts that get done in August and September. Guys get this close to free agency, they work hard to get to that point. It’s very possible we still re-sign them, but they need to go out there and understand what the opportunities are for them in free agency,” Blue Jays president Mark Shapiro said Sunday on MLB Network Radio.

“That will be something Ross [Atkins, general manager] addresses when he puts together his off-season plan, and Bo will certainly be a priority and a part of that.”
What has Bichette said about his Blue Jays future?
Bichette addressed his future in Toronto earlier this month.
“My priorities have always been to win, to be part of an organization that has that same goal in mind, and I want to play in an exciting environment. We’re checking all those boxes,” Bichette said, per MLB.com’s Keegan Matheson. “It’s a special time right now, and the fans are definitely making their case known.”
Bichette is batting .297 with 153 hits, 16 home runs, 81 RBIs, and 64 runs scored in 122 games this season.
