"End of an era": Blue Jays fans sad to see Romano go

Not many actually expected the Toronto Blue Jays to be searching for a new closer for the 2025 season.

There had been talk about the potential that they would non-tender Jordan Romano, who had club control for one more season, though it didn’t seem like a real possibility to most. Granted, he struggled in 2024, but it was an injury-riddled season. When healthy, he’s shown the ability to be one of the better closers in baseball.

Perhaps sensing that he wouldn’t return to his former self following surgery to repair a right elbow impingement in July, the Jays announced last night that they were non-tendering the 31-year-old, making him a free agent. It’s safe to say many Jays fans were disappointed with the decision.

Ultimately, the Blue Jays didn’t appear to be comfortable paying Romano, who was estimated to earn $7.75 million on a new deal. The front office may try to bring him back for less, but it seems rather unlikely at this time.

Instead, it looks like the Blue Jays will turn to the open market themselves in hopes of finding a new closer. Luckily for them, there are several great bullpen arms up for grabs in free agency.
