On Wednesday afternoon, MLB insider Jon Heyman did something not entirely out of the ordinary: published a quick free agency rumour in relation to the Toronto Blue Jays.
It was a simple 13-word tweet: “Jays are among a half dozen teams with interest in closer Carlos Estevez,” one that could mostly get lost in the timeline rather quickly given the number of baseball players currently looking for contracts this offseason.
But nothing really seems to get past the Blue Jays fan base these days, particularly when they’ve been used to swinging and missing when it comes to transactions for free agents this offseason, topped off by seeing Juan Soto opt for the New York Mets.
While they’ve been linked to all sorts of players big and small, it’s been a rather underwhelming offseason in Toronto, outside of a trade for Andres Gimenez with the Cleveland Guardians.
And though Heyman maybe could’ve anticipated the reaction when he fired off the trade rumour, it’s still worth a look at what the best (and worst) of social media has to say about the team’s reported interest:
If you're a free agent with upside, the #BlueJays probably have some level of interest in you. https://t.co/Lp68MeLTav

I think it would be easier to tell us who we aren’t interested in

Meanwhile, a few fans pointed out that “Carlos Estevez” is actually the birth name of actor Charlie Sheen, who portrayed pitcher Ricky ‘Wild Thing’ Vaughn in the 1989 movie Major League.

Estevez himself has had a decent run in the MLB, making the All-Star Game in 2023 while with the Los Angeles Angels, who he spent the first part of 2024 with before a trade to the Philadelphia Phillies.
An undrafted free agent out of the Dominican Republic, Estevez played the first six years of his career with the Colorado Rockies, with the team’s home ballpark of Coors Field being a notoriously tough place to evaluate pitchers due to the stadium’s extreme elevation.
In any case, we won’t exactly be hedging our bets to see him come north of the border, given Toronto’s track record of losing bidding wars.
