Toronto Blue Jays fans are witnessing a familiar face serve as the bat boy during today’s first spring training outing versus the New York Yankees.
As any fantasy football player knows, there is often some form of punishment for the individual who places last in their respective league. That seems to be no different for the Blue Jays, who had a league of their own this season.
Speaking with Lindsay Dunn of CityNews Toronto, Daulton Varsho revealed that this year’s outcome didn’t go as he would have liked. He didn’t finish last, however.
It was Chris Bassitt who finished at the bottom, and as punishment, is serving as the Blue Jays’ bat boy this afternoon.
“Chris Bassitt [lost],” Varsho said with a grin. “He will hopefully be bat boying on the first game on Saturday.”
It wasn’t all bad news for Blue Jays pitchers when it came to their league, however, as Varsho, the commissioner of the league, revealed that one of their relievers was able to win it all.
“Erik Swanson won, Joey Loperfido took second and Bo [Bichette] took third,” Varsho said. “I lost to Bo in the first round of playoffs by two points … It was heartbreaking for me, but you know, having the first pick and taking Christian McCaffrey just didn’t work out this year.”

Sure enough, once today’s game got underway, Bassitt was indeed put to work for the Blue Jays.

This type of punishment isn’t new for the Blue Jays, as last season saw relief pitcher Tim Mayza serve as the bat boy following his last place finish the year prior.

Safe to say, you don’t want to finish last in this Blue Jays league.
