Blue Jays add 28-year-old catcher off waivers

The Toronto Blue Jays are adding a bit of depth to their catching pool.

The Jays claimed Brian Serven off waivers via the Chicago Cubs, the team announced via X on Tuesday. A 28-year-old from Palm Desert, California, Serven was designated for assignment by the Cubs last Thursday and never actually suited up for the franchise.

Originally claimed by the Cubs from Colorado on January 5, he lasted less than a week before he was DFA’d to clear roster space for Chicago on their 40-man roster.

Throughout two seasons with the Rockies, Serven suited up for 73 games, where he had a .195 batting average, 41 hits, six homers, 17 RBIs and 19 runs scored across 210 at-bats.

Over the past seven seasons, he has made 377 appearances in the minor leagues, with stops in eight different spots in the Rockies’ minor league system.

The move adds some depth to Toronto’s system, which lost Tyler Heineman off waivers to the New York Mets in early December.

Whether Serven ever suits up for Toronto at the major league level is another story, however, with no guarantees of playing time behind a pair of veterans.

The Blue Jays currently have both Alejandro Kirk and Danny Jansen under contract for the 2024 season, with both players having considerably more success and experience at the MLB level than Serven.

It is quite hard to imagine Serven usurping either of those two roles unless there’s an injury, given his lack of ability to stick in the MLB during his career thus far.

Spring training opens next month for the Blue Jays, with their first game set for February 24.
