More than three weeks after being acquired by the Toronto Blue Jays ahead of the MLB trade deadline, Shane Bieber will make his long-awaited debut with the team this week.

Blue Jays manager John Schneider told reporters in Pittsburgh today that the 30-year-old pitcher will start Friday’s road game against the Miami Marlins.

It’ll be Bieber’s first MLB start since April 2, 2024, when he was a member of the Cleveland Guardians, following Tommy John surgery.

Bieber has made three starts in Triple-A with the Buffalo Bisons since being acquired by the Blue Jays, posting a 2.04 ERA in 17.2 innings. Bieber was especially impressive in his last rehab start Friday in Buffalo, posting seven shutout innings, while giving up just six hits.

“I’ve felt ready,” Bieber told reporters in Buffalo after his last start. “Tonight was a big step forward and happy with how it went.”

A former Cy Young winner, the Blue Jays are hoping that Bieber can help push them over the top this season. Toronto currently occupies first place in the AL East Division, holding a five-game lead over the Boston Red Sox heading into Monday’s games.
