Has Bo Bichette played his last game for the Toronto Blue Jays?

Since coming into the major leagues in 2019, Toronto Blue Jays shortstop Bo Bichette has been an immediate fan favourite.

A two-time All-Star who’s also led the American League in hits on a pair of occasions, Bichette has shown his potential as one of the game’s biggest stars.

But the Blue Jays have now been without Bichette for more than a month, as he last played on Sept. 6, and has been sidelined ever since with a knee injury.

Bichette made a push to try to suit up for either the American League Division Series against the New York Yankees or the American League Championship Series against the New York Yankees, but was not deemed eligible to play.

Bichette’s still been working out to try to get up to speed, and has been in the team’s dugout for every postseason game. Teammate Ernie Clement even wore Bichette’s jersey on Monday pregame as a tribute to his fellow infielder.

But with the Blue Jays now down 2-0 to the Seattle Mariners, there’s uncertainty about whether Bichette will ever play for Toronto again.

Bichette has a chance to go into free agency for the first time this winter for the first time in his career.

And given that Toronto held up well enough to go win the AL East over the stretch drive of the season and also win a playoff series without him, questions have arisen about what exactly the Blue Jays’ priorities might be this winter.

For Bichette, he made his own motivations clear earlier this year.

“My priorities have always been to win, to be part of an organization that has that same goal in mind, and I want to play in an exciting environment. We’re checking all those boxes,” Bichette said in July, per MLB.com’s Keegan Matheson. “It’s a special time right now, and the fans are definitely making their case known.”

For the Blue Jays players and staff, they’ve been keeping Bichette in their hearts during his absence from actually playing.

“I feel for him because it’s been a long three weeks physically and mentally. He wants nothing more than to be out there. But he’s going to keep himself ready and trying to get ready. Hopefully, we advance, and hopefully, he can kind of check off the boxes that we need him to check off,” manager John Schneider told reporters before the series.

Bichette isn’t the only well-known Blue Jay yet to suit up in the playoffs. Pitchers Jose Berrios and Max Scherzer, who made 30 and 17 starts for the Jays, have yet to suit up this postseason. Berrios was left off both the ALDS and ALCS rosters after a late-season elbow injury, while Scherzer could be available for the Jays later this series.

“I know Bo. It’s a tough situation to be in. He wants to be out there more than anybody. Hopefully, we give him another opportunity to be out there on that field with us,” Blue Jays pitcher Shane Bieber told Offside on Sunday.

“But we wouldn’t be in this position without him, so continually reminding him and the other guys [who haven’t played in the playoffs] that they’re a huge factor of why we’re in this position to begin with. And so it does mean a lot to have those guys in and around the clubhouse every day and in the dugout during the games.”

The Blue Jays head to Seattle for the first of a possible three road games in the series on Wednesday night. First pitch is set for 8:08 p.m. ET.
