Brandon Belt once paid fan a large amount to protect Toronto Blue Jays' boombox

The 6ix Inning Stretch podcast is already doing a superb job of giving behind-the-scenes stories of current and former Toronto Blue Jays players.

The podcast, which is co-hosted by Whit Merrifield and Lindsay Dunn, dropped its first episode last week. It included several gems from Merrifield’s time with the Blue Jays, including a hilarious story about pitcher Yusei Kikuchi accidentally flooding his hotel room.

This week saw the new podcast come out with a new episode, featuring their first-ever guest in Matt Chapman. The 32-year-old, now a member of the San Francisco Giants, spent both the 2022 and 2023 seasons with the Blue Jays.

The episode involved plenty of catching up and reminiscing between Merrifield and Chapman, and also featured a hilarious story about another former Blue Jay from that roster, Brandon Belt.

Merrifield explained that during a road trip, the Jays were in the airport waiting for their bags and began playing some music on their boombox. One lady, whom Merrifield said would be described as a “Karen” in today’s era, began complaining about the music.

“My favourite part about that was the little girl who was dancing, her dad looked like he had played lineman in the NFL for 10 years, he was huge. His wife was of similar build; she worked out. So when the Karen came up and said, ‘Hey, turn the music down,’ Brandon Belt gave the little girl’s mom $1,000 and said, ‘Keep these ladies away from us.’

“[The ladies] came back and they said, ‘Nope, you’re not getting close to this boombox.'”

While the $1,000 meant next to nothing to Belt, who enjoyed a 13-year MLB career, it is a significant amount to most, especially for nothing more than protecting a boombox.

Blue Jays fans should expect to hear plenty more of these types of stories going forward on this new podcast with Merrifield and Dunn.
