Toronto Blue Jays games might stop being broadcast by Apple — but not quite yet

Toronto Blue Jays broadcasts might be getting a minor shakeup in the future.

Most Blue Jays fans have been fortunate enough to only require one channel to follow their team each season, as Sportsnet has been the sole broadcaster of the team since Rogers Communications began owning the franchise in 2004.

As long as one of Canada’s telecommunications giants owns the franchise, it’s likely that the vast majority of Blue Jays games will remain with Rogers-owned properties on a national broadcast.

That’s a contrast to the experience of most American baseball fans, who have seen many regional broadcasters shuttered in the past few years, with ongoing uncertainty year-to-year about where each of the 29 U.S.-based teams will have their games on television.

But in recent seasons, a select few Blue Jays games (usually about one Friday game per month) have been exclusively broadcast via Apple TV+, a subscription streaming service.

Select games being streaming-specific isn’t a new concept, as the MLB has flirted with YouTube and Facebook-only games in the past.

But Yahoo Sports’ Kendall Baker reported Tuesday that Apple is “fully out” of the MLB broadcasting game, with NBC (and its streaming service Peacock), ESPN, and Netflix (for the home run derby) being a likely conclusion to this round of bargaining for the league’s TV rights, which expire after the 2028 season.

Baker later followed up that Apple’s future involvement with the MLB is “a bit of a mystery” and “still more up in the air,” as was NBC’s involvement.

In any case, we should have some news fairly soon about the future of Apple TV+’s involvement in the MLB and how it affects the Blue Jays.

How long have the Blue Jays been on Apple TV+?

Friday Night Baseball began in 2022 as the first major sports streaming property for Apple TV+.

The Blue Jays have been featured on there several times a season, including as recently as last Friday.

Apple acquired the broadcast rights for US$85 million per year, a total value of US$595 million in a deal that runs through 2028.

Apple TV+ is available for $12.99 monthly in Canada, with a seven-day free trial for new subscribers.
