The White House is projecting 100K to 240K coronavirus deaths in the US
During a Tuesday afternoon press conference, the White House released new projections revealing that the US may see between 100,000 to 240,000 coronavirus-related deaths in the coming months.
President Trump warned that the next few weeks would be a “rough” period and reminded Americans to continue practicing social distancing efforts.
“We are continuing to see things go up,” said Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. “We cannot be discouraged by [the numbers] because the mitigation is actually working and will work.”
Members of the Coronavirus Task Force believe that, although projections are in the hundreds of thousands, the actual results will be fewer if all Americans continue to prevent the spread of disease.
“We really believe we can do a lot better than that,” said Dr. Deborah Birx, coordinator of the White House Coronavirus Task Force.
In addition to these new projections, the White House also revealed that distancing measures will be maintained until at least April 30, with Birx concluding that she’s feeling reassured of the situation thanks to Seattle’s current coronavirus rates.
According to the CDC, the US currently has 163,539 reported cases of coronavirus, with Washington State currently displaying a slight decline in cases.
