As countries and cities around the world continue to ease lockdown restrictions and permit businesses to reopen, certain attractions and establishments are getting creative in how they enforce physical distancing guidelines.

We’ve already seen a few examples, such as a park in New York using circle spaces to divvy up the area, or a restaurant in Amsterdam where you can have a special meal that is contamination-free in your own private greenhouse. Even a restaurant in Thailand is using adorable plush pandas as seat holders to get the point across.

Now, the Piazza Giotto in Vicchio, Italy, is using a grid of white squares to remind visitors and residents to keep their distance.

The installation, called “StoDistante,” was created by Caret Studio to serve as an interpretation and representation of the new forms of physical distancing brought on by the transmission of COVID-19.

The project is meant to be a temporary solution for residents and visitors to be able to visit the Vicchio Plaza while adhering to the health and safety measures implemented by the Italian government.

“StoDistante is conceived as a platform for citizens to reclaim and reactivate open spaces through the hosting of a series of initiatives as rules are relaxed in the coming weeks,” the studio explains on its website.

The region of Tuscany’s mandate for individuals to remain 6 feet apart served as inspiration for the installation, while the creation of a grid is meant to allow for movement around the square.

“The regular grid has been developed into a pattern,” the site explains, “composed by a gradient of squares of differing dimensions, creating new perspectives and interactions within the existing context.”

This type of project is a first for Vicchio, but the overall concept has the potential to be similarly deployed in other public areas. StoDistante provides an appealing temporary fix for those who would like to venture out into the world and take in some culture and history while still being mindful of the safety of others.
