Just landed: A Hello Kitty pop up has touched down in Seattle

Dec 9 2019, 10:33 am

Hello Kitty is 45-years-old.

To celebrate her birthday, Sanrio is hosting a travelling pop up in various US Cities. The pop-up, Hello Kitty Friends Around The World Tour, has landed in Bellevue and will stick around until Sunday, December 29, 2019.

The 10,000-sq-ft pop-up is centred around a travel and vacation theme and takes visitors on a journey around the world with Hello Kitty. Visitors will make stops in London, Paris, New York, Honolulu, and Tokyo, after checking in with a host who hands out boarding passes and passports.

Visitors can then venture through the pop-up, helping Hello Kitty pack in her bedroom, and even waiting with her in the boarding room of an airport. Once the flight lands, join Hello Kitty through a worldwide adventure, taking public transit, surfing, and even enjoying eats at mini cafes.

The cartoon pop-up features plenty of Instagrammable spots, with a new one around every corner. Notable parts of the pop-up include a larger-than-life plush New York Pizza, cardboard cutouts of Hello Kitty’s clothing, and a French Boulangerie.

While walking around the pop-up, be on the lookout for some of Hello Kitty’s Sanrio Friends, such as Gudetama and Keoppi, who are hidden on posters, and make appearances in certain countries. Visitors may even meet Hello Kitty, as she wanders around, looking to make new friends.

The global trip ends in the baggage claim gift shop, where you can buy exclusive Hello Kitty merchandise — everything from her Herschel Supply Co., collaboration to her Girl Skateboards collaboration.

Hello Kitty, a beloved character, has been around since 1974, when she was first imagined by Sanrio in Japan.

In 1976, after appearing for the first time on a coin purse the previous year, Hello Kitty made her way to North America and stole hearts. She was even appointed for Junior Ambassador for UNICEF in the US in 1983, and UNICEF’s Global Special Friend of Children in 2004.

Visit her 45th Anniversary pop-up through December 29, before the tour departs for another city.
