Derek Chauvin convicted of murder in the death of George Floyd

A Minnesota jury has found Derek Chauvin guilty on all three charges of second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter in the death of George Floyd.

Jurors announced their final verdict Monday after approximately 10 hours of deliberation.

Sentencing will take place in eight weeks and Chauvin will be held without bail until that time.

Chauvin faces a 40-year maximum sentence for the second-degree murder conviction, a 25-year sentence for third-degree murder and a 10-year sentence for second-degree manslaughter.

Floyd’s death in May 2020 reignited the conversation around racism in the United States and sparked protests around the world against police violence on Black Americans.

In a graphic video posted to social media on May 25, 2020, Floyd was heard repeatedly saying that he cannot breathe while Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin held him down with a knee on his neck for nine minutes and 29 seconds.

According to an official police statement, Minneapolis police responded to a 911 call reporting a forgery in progress.

Chauvin had originally been charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter.
