Yelp to display how well a restaurant is observing COVID-19 guidelines

Yelp will now display user feedback regarding the health and safety practices at local businesses.

The decision comes after consumer interest rose 41% for businesses that added COVID-19 updates to their Yelp pages between September 1 and December 31, 2020.

The app and website now allow users to report if they observed the enforcement of physical distancing and mask-wearing among staff.

Yelp has also allowed businesses to update their service offerings and health and safety practices, including heated outdoor seating, 1:1 sessions, and disposable or contactless menus.

All of the new COVID-19 information will be displayed on a business’s Yelp page under the “Health & Safety Measures” heading in the COVID-19 section.

Because “social distancing enforced” and “staff wears masks” are the health and safety precautions that can be most easily observed by customers, they are the only properties displayed at this time.

Yelp has ensured that the COVID-19 section on business pages will be regularly updated to reflect new user responses. Users can also turn on push notifications that send an alert when a business they’ve visited updates its COVID-19 information.
