Take a virtual tour of the Great Barrier Reef guided by David Attenborough

Travel may not be in the cards for the time being, but you can still transport yourself to faraway places from the comfort of your own home.

Sir David Attenborough, British historian and narrator of hit series including Planet Earth and Our Planet, is inviting guests on an interactive experience that takes them to one of the most beautiful natural wonders of the world, the Great Barrier Reef of Australia.

Viewers can admire this mystical and majestic underwater world through “David Attenborough’s Barrier Reef.”

“This is one of the most spectacular, complex, but fragile ecosystems in the world,” Attenborough states in an introductory video.

“60 years ago, I dived on the reef for the first time. And, ever since, it has held a deep fascination for me.”

The project takes viewers through an engrossing and informative experience that covers everything from how coral grows to the sounds the reef makes to those that inhabit it, as well as the dangerous impact of environmental hazards such as coral bleaching.

Through this initiative, Attenborough hopes to increase awareness surrounding the marvelous complexity of this “beautiful but threatened world” as well as the essential steps that must be taken to ensure its survival.

The interactive experience is broken down into “chapters” that each focus on various points of history, inhabitants, and threats to the reef, and tracks how many kilometers users have traveled as they progress.

The Great Barrier Reef extends 2,300 kilometers along the eastern coast of Australia and is over twice the size of the world’s second-largest coral reef.

“With over 1500 species of fish, 600 coral species and 30 different whale and dolphin species, it is one of the most biodiverse and complex ecosystems on the planet.”
