Uber Eats is waiving delivery fees for independent restaurants across North America due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
The move is one of the company’s newly announced efforts to support independent restaurant owners and operators as the industry faces “unprecedented challenges.”
“We know the coming weeks will be challenging ones for many small business owners, and we want to help restaurants focus on food, not finances,” said Janelle Sallenave, head of Uber Eats for the US and Canada, in a release.
“That’s why we’re working to drive increased demand to more than 100,000 independent restaurants across the US and Canada through free delivery and marketing efforts.”
In addition to the waiving of fees, the company will be offering up dedicated marketing campaigns — both in-app and via email — to promote delivery from local restaurants.
The campaign will especially highlight eateries that are new to the app.
Also, restaurants across North America will now be able to opt-in for daily payouts, rather than the weekly ones that are currently standard for the company.
“We’ve heard from restaurants that they’re worried about what the health crisis will do to sales, and its impact on cash flow and their ability to pay suppliers or employees,” said Therese Lim, head of restaurant product at Uber Eats.
As this tumultuous time will likely see deliveries take over a larger percentage of restaurants’ sales, the ability to access those payouts earlier will make a difference.
