Those anticipating a return to the lights and glamor of New York’s Broadway stages will have to wait a little longer, as the shutdown of performances has been extended again, this time through the remainder of 2020.
The initial announcement of the shutdown was effective Friday, March 12, and it was later extended through September 6, citing the pandemic as the reason. Now, the Broadway League is providing exchanges and refunds for tickets purchased for all shows through January 3, 2021.

At the time of the original suspension, 31 performances were in production, including eight new shows in previews. As well, eight productions were rehearsing in preparation to debut in the spring.
“The Broadway experience can be deeply personal, but it is also, crucially, communal,” Thomas Schumacher, chairman of the board of The Broadway League, said in a press release. “The alchemy of 1,000 strangers bonding into a single audience fueling each performer on stage and behind the scenes will be possible again when Broadway theatres can safely host full houses.”

Schumacher continues that the safety, health, and well-being of all casts, crews, orchestras, and audiences is the number one priority, adding that the Broadway community is looking forward to when they can return to the stage and delight audiences with their talent and storytelling, but only when it is “safe to do so.”
“One thing is for sure,” he explains. “When we return, we will be stronger and more needed than ever.”
The Broadway League continues to collaborate with theatrical unions as well as “key experts” to gain further understanding regarding the best protocols and courses of action to ensure a safe reopening once they are able to do so.
Those in possession of tickets for performances through January 3, 2021, can expect an email from their point of purchase with comprehensive details surrounding refund and exchange options.
