McDonald’s announced today that it will be closing the seating areas and self-service beverage bars and kiosks in its company-owned restaurants across the US due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The American fast-food chain will continue to serve customers through Drive-Thru, walk-in, take-out, and McDelivery.

“Our decisions are guided by expert local and national health authority guidance,” reads the statement. “Additionally, we are complying with all local and state restaurant restrictions, where applicable.

These new health and safety measures will be effective at the close of business on March 16.

McDonald’s has announced it will be closing all PlayPlaces at US locations, also effective today.

As for the independent franchisees in the US, McDonald’s says those locations “continue to focus on the needs of their local communities and make safe and caring decisions.”

The release also said franchisees are “strongly encouraged to adopt similar operations procedures while keeping the needs of their people and communities at the center of their decisions. This guidance is supported by franchisee leadership and is expected to be adopted by the majority of franchisees.”
