Delta is suspending service at 10 airports across the US

Effective May 13, Delta Air Lines is temporarily suspending operations at 10 US airports.

The decision comes as a means to consolidate the company’s operations in markets served by multiple airports while passenger and customer numbers are substantially diminished during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“These changes will allow more of our frontline employees to minimize their COVID-19 exposure risk while ensuring convenient access to Delta’s network for those who must travel,” the airline explains on its website. “Delta will continue providing essential service to impacted communities via neighboring airports.”

Delta is also temporarily suspending flights to Saskatoon International Airport starting May 13.

The stations will stay closed until at least September as the company evaluates the overall needs of its network. The airline will accommodate travelers whose plans have been impacted due to the service suspensions.

As well, Delta employees working at affected stations will be provided pay protection options through September 30, 2020.

“The safety of our employees and customers remains our primary focus as we navigate these challenges together,” Sandy Gordon, senior vice president of Delta’s Domestic Airport Operations, said in a statement. “By consolidating operations while customer traffic is low, we can allow more of our people to stay home in accordance with local health guidelines.”

Delta Air Lines previously announced that it would be reducing its second-quarter schedule by 85%, including an 80% reduction in US domestic capacity and 90% internationally.

According to its website, the company is seeking alternative opportunities to implement similar procedures in other additional markets.

Delta also filed a request with the US Department of Transportation (DOT) to implement similar consolidation measures in an additional nine cities that are currently serviced by multiple airports. According to the website, the request is still under review.
