Washington, Oregon, and California band together in coronavirus pact

Apr 14 2020, 6:34 pm

On Monday, Washington Governor Jay Inslee, Oregon Governor Kate Brown, and California Governor Gavin Newsom announced an agreement to work together on the eventual reopening of their economies and to keep COVID-19 as contained as possible.

The public health leaders in Washington, Oregon, and California are currently focusing their efforts on protecting vulnerable populations. They are gathering supplies of personal protective equipment, mitigating the non-direct coronavirus health impacts, and making sure that there is adequate hospital surge capacity.

The states have also decided to collaborate on a shared approach towards reopening their economies and will be following these principles while building out a framework:

  • Residents’ health comes first.
  • Health outcomes and science — not politics — will guide decisions. All modifications to stay at home orders must be made based on an understanding of the total health impacts on coronavirus.
  • The three states must work together, as it’s the only way they will effectively overcome the virus.

Washington, Oregon, and California will be sharing their best practices in the hopes of protecting the general public by developing a system for testing, tracking, and isolating patients.
